looks like i got the NGG plugin working; this involved some hefty research,  ”on the fly” server configs to force php version from 4 to 5 and a htaccess file to set permissions…

NGG plugin now correctly returns memory errors if image is too large (instead of just “looping”) on the create thumbnails screen. Additional bonuses: a secure wp install and better load times/stability due to php5.
